The summer is for falling in love, right? While trying recipes from my new novel Opposites Attack (bouillabaisse to wild boar) and strolling through central North Carolina farmer’s markets in search of the freshest, closest-grown produce, I’ve become seriously hooked on lavender in every possible form. Lavender is a scent I’d previously associated with my grandmother who only used Yardley Lavender Soap. I loved grandma but didn’t want to turn into her just yet. And then I saw Lavender Anne’s bricks of lavender soap that look good enough to eat.
How do these look and sound to you? Sage & Juniper, Coffee Bar, Lemongrass & Grapefruit, Jasmine, Orange & Poppy, Mint Chocolate Swirl, Sea Salt, Frankincense and Myrrh, Rosemary & Green Tea. She’ll also shave off small slices for a dollar each, making it impossible not to take home a sampler bag. And then there’s Felted Soap. Felted?
It’s their soap — any kind you choose — combined with local wool from Farm Girl Arts (check out her extraordinary commissioned sculptures of pets made entirely with wool from sheep she’s raised). Felted soap gently exfoliates while producing a rich lather. The wool also makes it last 2-3 times longer than average soap.
Explore your local farmer’s markets for more than just the home grown fresh produce. You never know what other treasures you’ll find.
